Scope and content:

The materials are the personal and professional family papers of Norman Jonathan Sipe, his wife Isabel Sipe (née Deines), and their son Gregory F. Sipe. The materials include identification papers, correspondence, photographs, and journals. The bulk of the material is comprised of correspondence.

Topics discussed include Gregory's service in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany under Major General George Smith Patton IV (whose father was George S. Patton), Norman and Isabel's life in the United States and relationships with extended family members, responses to Gregory's dating advertisements, letters discussing love and quarrels addressed to Gregory, and Gregory's professional work.

A large portion of the correspondence documents Gregory's unsuccessful efforts to obtain paid leave from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in order to be with his mother during her illness and death. Additionally, one correspondent, Virginia, worked for the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam during the war and discusses the atmosphere there between 1970 and 1971. The travel journal documents Gregory's one month trip throughout France with a woman named Sandy and details their activities, what they ate, and where they stayed. Some of the materials contain outdated and harmful language.

Biographical / historical:

The Sipe family lived in Kansas City, Missouri and San Francisco, California. Norman J. Sipe was born on November 1907 in Hiawatha, Kansas and died in 1982. Isabel Sipe (née Deines) was Norman's wife, they married in 1935. Isabel Sipe died in 1984.

Gregory F. Sipe was born on February 17, 1945 to Norman and Isabel. Gregory served in the Unites States Army beginning in 1969, was stationed in Germany, and was removed from active duty in December of 1970. Gregory was married in 1975, and divorced in 1981. Following his time in the army, Gregory moved to London and worked for the Greater London Council (GLC) Department of Architecture and Civic Design, and later taught architecture at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
