Biographical / Historical
This collection highlights materials belonging to members of the Winterscheid and Phillips families.
Robert Phillips (b. 1/13/1877) was born in Farmington, Illinois to Aaron W. Phillips and Margaret Jane Emery Phillips and
moved to Kansas at a very young age. He later served in the Philippine-American War, presumably coming into possession of
and leaving behind photographs (Series 1) to his older sister Jenny Elizabeth Covart née Phillips (11/27/1874 - 1941). She
passed those photographs to her daughter Isal Amelia Winterscheid née Covart (8/30/1899 - 12/22/1992). Isal was born in Kansas
and lived in Liberty as a child.
Isal later worked as a school teacher in Gridley, Kansas and married Claude Vernon Winterscheid, American Expeditionary Force
(3/26/1897 - 11/26/1986) in Gridley on October 24, 1920. Claude was born in Naponee, Nebraska to John and Fannie Winterscheidt
of Illinois. He served overseas with Company C, 1st Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division (Machine Gun) during
the First World War, during which he was wounded in his right arm in September 1918. He wrote Isal from overseas, often mentioning
correspondence with his sister, Pearl. He later earned a bachelors degree from Kansas State Agricultural College. Both were
interred at Tahoma Cemetary in Yakima, Washington.
Isal and Claude gave birth to a son, Private First Class Loren Covart Winterscheid, United States Army (10/5/1925 - 12/22/2017)
in Manhattan, Kansas, and later moved to Idaho and gave birth to a daughter, Joyce, before taking up residence in Oregon and
Washington.
Loren was working at Salem General Hospital in Oregon when he registered for the draft in October 1943 and enlisted on March
17, 1944 at Fort Lewis. He served with Medical Service Company, 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division during the Second
World War. He later earned a bachelors degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon in 1948, a doctorate in microbiology
from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1953, and a medical doctorate in 1954, going on to enjoy a full
career in medical academia as faculty, dean, and director of various schools and medical centers including the University
of Washington. He married Muriel Elaine Oliver (1926 - 2017) on December 30, 1948 in Yakima, Washington and the two had a
daughter, Ann Findley Winterscheid (1952 - 2016). Loren passed away in Seattle, in 2017.
Both the Winterscheid and Covart families trace their heritage to the founding of the United States, with several members
of the Winterscheid heritage (Moore and Sheperd families) serving in the American Revolutionary War. All information herein
compiled and provided by the donor with supplementary information found and corroborated through Ancestry.com; see foldout
