Background
- Scope and content:
-
Papers and photographs document the career of Southern Pacific fireman, road foreman, and trainmaster James "Jim" R. Efaw in the 1940s to 1980s. There is a union membership card, dues receipts, and union rates of enginemen and firemen in 1952 he collected as part of his membership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Enginemen and Firemen early in his career, an annual pass, business cards, correspondence, time books, trip log books, earning receipts, promotion announcements, and emergency contacts for safety issues at work. Also included an excursion ticket for Cumbes & Toltec Railroad and a thank you letter from the city of El Paso, Texas for his assistance with railroad equipment during a celebration in 1981.
Photographs contain black and white and color snapshots of the Efaw family, including one of a young Jim taken in the 1920s with his mother, and of Jim Efaw with his daughter Jackie and his wife Edna. Photographs taken of Jim while at work and at his retirement party are also included in a portrait file. There are a series of black and white photographs removed from an album, and these show the Sierra Nevada range conditions in the summer of 1949 and the winter of 1952. Loose photographs document the aftermath of various accidents and track damage in California, New Mexico, and Texas. There are a few photographs of the damage of the Roseville train bomb explosion of April 1973.
Two videotapes produced by the Southern Pacific Transporation Company, "EP&Southwestern Vaughn to Carrizozo", parts 1 and 33 have been removed from the collection and added to the CSRM videotape collection.
