Background

Scope and content:

The Francis Breedlove Collection contains numerous records pertaining to Mr. Breedlove's career as a railroad engineer for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Included in the collection are a total of eight folders containing certificates, employement applications, examination certificates, memberships, long service passes from the 1930s and 1940s, paychecks from 1919 and 1943, retirement papers, and finally, a leather wallet and a Colorado Operator's License, which are filed under Miscellaneous since they do not fall into any of the aforementioned categories.

The certificates in the collection include a Loyalty Certificate from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for Mr. Breedlove, dated 1930, as well as a certificate from the AT&SF commending Mr. Breedlove on forty-four years and five months of employment with the company, dated 1945.

There is documentation of Mr. Breedlove's membership with the AT&SF Hospital Association, the Locomotive Engineers Life and Accident Insurance Association, The Low Twelve Club's Widows and Orphan's Fund, The Masonic Euclid Lodge, and finally, the International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Finally, the retirement papers include Mr. Breedlove's termination paper from the AT&SF, and a certificate of annuity to Mr. Breedlove from the United States Railroad Retirement Board.

Biographical / historical:

Francis S. Breedlove (April 10, 1880 to December 28, 1954) was employed by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway from January 17, 1901 until November 1, 1945 as a railroad engineer.
