Poetical Works of James R. Lowell (Boston: Ticknor, 1862) (2 vols.) given to Parker by Chauncey Carroll Bush, Shasta County judge; Banquet of Plato… Percy Bysshe Shelley (London: Cassell & Co, 1905) inscribed by Osgood Putnam; Sapphires from Burns (Boston: De Wolfe, Fiske & Co., 1890); caption cards (2) for exhibit loans from Jean Parker McEwen, n.d.; New Testament (New York: American Bible Society, 1853); Sacred Songs and Hymns of Various Passages of Scripture (Glasgow: printed by A. Napier, 1815); silver cup, engraved "Jean Parker/Prize Poem/for Total Abstinence 1866."

Biographical / historical:

Jean Parker was born in Nova Scotia in 1842. Her family came to California and settled in Shasta County. Jean was sent to attend high school in San Francisco in the early 1860s, and returned to Shasta to teach. After the Civil War she came back to San Francisco, and during her career there she taught at Denman School and was principal at Rincon Primary, Haight School, and Broadway Grammar, the latter being re-named for her in 1901. She was highly regarded for her education policies and teaching excellence. She died in Belmont, California in 1920.
