Background

Scope and content:

Indenture made March 1, 1872 between Cosmas Damm, grantor, and Jacob Breiling, grantee, to parcel in block 312, Western Addition. Pasted to verso is notary’s certificate and seal, with county recorder’s statement written across it. A note in envelope accompanying deed indicates that Captain M. V. Bennett may have donated the document to the de Young Museum in 1940.

Biographical / historical:

Cosmas Damian Damm was born in Bavaria, emigrated to California and was naturalized in San Francisco in 1867. He worked as an upholsterer in San Francisco and in Sacramento, and died in 1879. Jacob Breiling, also born in Bavaria, came to San Francisco and operated a meat market with his brother John; Jacob died here in 1878. Breiling’s parcel was later owned by Rosalie Morris, and the 1888 dwelling on it is numbered 2142-2144 Bush Street (2018).
