This collection consists of materials related to Stephen Bell's involvement with the San Diego Gay Liberation Front, the San Diego State University (SDSU) Gay and Lesbian Student Union, the Southwestern Gay Conference at San Diego, pickets and political activity in San Diego. These materials include newsletters, newspapers, newsletters, flyers of varying sizes, membership records, meeting notes, essays and drafts, pamphlets, correspondence, magazines, context sheets, spiritual writings and exercises.

Stephen Bell was one of the early members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) in San Diego and was later one of the presidents of the organization as a student at San Diego State College. In 1970, he attended what could be considered the first Pride event, a "Gay In," in Presidio Park hosted by GLF. Stephen was active in making sure that San Diego's gay community was represented in the national gay dialogue by advocating for members of the San Diego GLF attend the first ever national gay conference in Chicago in 1971. In the same year, Stephen led one of the most visible gay protests up until this time, protesting police harassment of LGBTQ+ people. Later, Stephen graduated with a degree in sociology and became a teacher of dance and opened his own dance studio.1
