Biographical / historical:

Marjorie Louise Henry was born October 2, 1930 in Columbus, Ohio. She received a B.S. in business administration from Ohio State University in 1952 and then worked in sales and as a crewmember on luxury liners, including S.S. Mariposa. From 1965 to 1968 she worked in the student activities department at UC Irvine. In 1968 she moved to San Diego to take a position with Scripps Institution of Oceanography as an office manager for the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Her first sea-going expedition was on DSDP Leg 10 in 1970 aboard D/V Glomar Challenger, where she was the first female yeoman. Henry worked as a yeoman and marine technician on many DSDP legs until the end of the project in 1983. She compiled and typed scientific reports and procedure manuals, encoded data, cataloged the shipboard science library, and stood watches in the core lab. Louise Henry retired in 1986 and died on December 18, 1989.
