Background

Scope and content:

Jean-Baptiste Carhaix (1946-2023) was a French photographer. The collection includes portrait photographs of early members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an order of gay and queer nuns who incorporate religious iconography, drag, street theater, and satire in their charitable fundraising, advocacy for LGBTQ rights, and other causes. Also included are images of early AIDS marches and events, including images of Bobbi Campbell and other PWA activists, and images from Carhaix’s series titled “Sang pour Sang” that explores Carhaix’s relationship with the Catholic Church. The photographs are digital files; no original prints are in the collection. Physical materials include a catalog of his Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence work and exhibit posters as well as a “US Nuns Killed with US Guns in El Salvador” banner.
