Background

Scope and content:

The San Francisco Odalisque Newspaper Collection contains issues 1-5 and 7-9 (missing the 6th and 10th issues) of Volume I (the only volume) of the publication. The issues feature articles related to various social, political and art-related topics ranging from immigration, education, cinema and film, race, gender, poetry, police, music, and more. Each issue also includes artistic graphics and photographs submitted by various artists and contributors.

Biographical / historical:

The San Francisco Odalisque was a biweekly newspaper for the arts and politics. The publication was short-lived, as it was printed for half a year during 1976, from June to December, with a total of 10 issues of Volume I (the only volume).

Odalisque's headquarters was located at 2630 19th Street in San Francisco. With Alston Beinhorn as its publisher, Scott Riklin as its editor, and Liz Taylor in charge of art direction, the Odalisque also relied on other staff and the community's contributors to submit their own work for publication. The publication was discontinued in December of 1976 after just ten issues, because of lack of funds and support. The newspaper's introductory copies were issued free to its supporters, however the single copy price was 25 cents.

Odalisque was dedicated to catering to artists' tastes and interests, as it showcased many articles, reviews, and photographs in regards to various political, social, and artistic issues.
