Biography/History
Scottish photographer of Dundee, well-known for portraits and landscape view. James Valentine, joined in his studio by his
sons, William Dobson Valentine, and George D. Valentine, targeted the middle and upper class tourist market, producing drawing
room albums of landscapes of Scotland, and later, England, Jamaica, Norway, Morocco, and New Zealand.
Scope and Content
The churches, castles, homes, and monuments of the city of Edinburgh figure prominently among the
photographs
, with opening views of St John Church and castle, Holyrood Palace, and Scott's Monument. There is an excellent photo of the
gabled buildings along Lawn Market, which served as the market-place for what was called "Inland Merchandise," such items
as yarn, stockings, coarse cloth and other such articles, and in later years, linen. The large photo of Edinburgh Castle is
surrounded with smaller photos of several of its rooms and architectural details; a similar arrangement is used with Abbotsford,
the former home of Sir Walter Scott, highlighting the entrance hall, drawing room, study, and library. Tantallon Castle, Linlithgow
Palace in West Lothian outside of Edinburgh, Roslyn Castle, Edinburgh Abbey, gothic Melrose Abbey (where the embalmed heart
of Robert Burns is said to be buried), Kelso Abbey, and the 12th-century Dryburgh Abbey on the banks of the River Tweed are
also portrayed. The rugged landscape of Scotland is documented in numerous photos of rocky glens, waterfalls, rushing rivers,
rocky coastlines and beaches, caves, and wooded slopes. In Glasgow, Valentine has recorded the cathedral, the university,
West End Park, Georges Square, and Broomielaw Bridge. Photos of other sites include Alloway (the Burns Monument and Garden,
Brig O'Doon bridge), Oban, Glencoe (scene of the Massacre of Glencoe), Muirton (Caledonian Canal), Inverness, Ayr, Forres,
Nairn (Cawdor Castle), Aberdeen (harbor, Aberdeen Castle), Braemar (mill on the Clunie), and Blair Atholl, for its rolling
countryside and rocky falls on the Fender, as well as the Hebridean islands of Arran and Staffa (Clamshell Cave, Iona Cathedral,
and Finial's Cave). The rivers of Scotland are well documented in the album, which includes views of the Devon, Tay, Bruar,
Fender, Clunie, Findhorn, Clyde, Tweed, and Ness, as well as lakes such as Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine, Loch Kinnord and many
others.
