Background

Frederick Slate, physicist, the University of California at Berkeley, was born in London, England, on January 21, 1852. He obtained his degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1871, was instructor of chemistry from 1874 to 1877, and studied at Berlin and Strasbourg from 1877 to 1879. He came to the University of California where he taught physics from 1891 to 1918, and was the author of several books on physics.
