Abstract:
Records for the period of August Vollmer's administration. Primarily Vollmer's correspondence with other law enforcement officers, city officials, private organizations and government agencies, professional associations, and private individuals, relating to all phases of the Department's operations, the introduction of reforms and modern technology, his interest in formal police training, his consultation work, etc. Also included are "special and general orders" issued by Vollmer and some miscellaneous papers including speeches and statements, budget data, etc. A small file of letters written by Vollmer's successors (1932-1951) also in the collection.

Scope and content:

The records of the Berkeley Police Department consist primarily of Vollmer's correspondence with other law enforcement officers, city officials, various organizations and government agencies, professional associations, and private individuals, relating to all phases of the Department's operations, the introduction of reforms and modern technology into the Department, his interest in formal police training, his consultation work, etc. Included also in the collection are "special and general orders" issued by Vollmer and some miscellaneous Papers, including speeches and statements, budget data, reports on officers' meetings, etc. The papers are described in greater detail in the Key to Arrangement which follows.

Additional documentation on Vollmer is available in ""August Vollmer: Pioneer in Police Professionalism,"" (73/89 c) which consists of transcripts of a series of tape-recorded interviews with colleagues and friends.

Acquisition information:
The records of the Berkeley Police Department for the period of August Vollmer's administration (1905-1932) were given to The Bancroft Library by the Department in April 1972, complementing Vollmer's personal papers (C-B 403), which were a gift of his estate in 1956-1957.
