Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of maps, photographs, and descriptive text on various buildings in Orange County, California, primarily public institutions. The Pacific National Fire Insurance Company in Santa Ana, California produced these records between 1942 and 1951 for insurance purposes. The photographs and maps provide visual documentation of the buildings and their surroundings as they appeared in the 1940's and the accompanying text provides detailed information on construction, location, size, and maintenance.

Each group of maps, photos, and text documents a building or group of buildings. The building types include fire station, hospital, airport, and court house. This arrangement reflects the original order of the material, which was acquired in a binder labeled "Facts and Comments Regarding Sound Insurance #2."

The collection is organized alphabetically by building type, and the container list indicates the individual Orange County cities where the various buildings were located. A miscellaneous category contains information on two buildings not integrated within the other building groups. Although most of the building groups have complete documentation, a few groups lack text, maps, or photographs. The following groups do not have text: Buena Park's American Legion Hall, Agriculture, Airport, Detention Home, Fire Stations, Radio and Miscellaneous. The Detention Home lacks photographs, and the Fire Stations lack maps.
