The David B. Abernethy miscellaneous papers, 1948-1988 contain notes, reports, correspondence, pamphlets, and other printed matter, relating to political, economic, cultural, and social affairs in Nigeria, and to the campus movement in the United States for divestment from South Africa. The materials are divided into four sections: speeches and writings, correspondence, subject file and printed materials. The speeches and writings section cover field notes from Nigeria and divestment issues of South Africa. The rest of the collection include correspondence, education, labor movement, sports, tourism, pamphlets and bulletins produced by various political, cultural, youth, women, religious, economic groups, and biographical sketches of prominent Nigerian political leaders of the 1960s's Nigeria. It also includes congressional hearing on South Africa, reports by Investment Responsibility Research Center and the South Africa Task Force, South African labor codes, and press clippings that cover the economic and political issues of 1980's apartheid South Africa

David B. Abernethy is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Stanford University. Professor Abernethy received his B.A and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University and his M.A. from Oxford University. Professor Abernethy's speciality is in sub-Saharan Africa and he is the author of The Political Dilemma of Popular Education: An African Case (Stanford, 1969) and The Dynamics of Global Dominance: European Overseas Empires, 1415-1980 (Yale, 2000).
