- Biographical / historical:
-
The Association of Chicana Activists (AChA) at SDSU was founded in 1991 by members of the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) seeking to focus on issues related to Chicanas. Founding members included Silvia Bustamante, Martha Cervantez, Guadalupe R. Corona, Rosa Hernandez, Maria del Carmen Mendez, Lorena Valenzuela and Teresa Zamora. In 1995, a second chapter was formed at the University of San Diego. The philosophy of the association includes raising cultural awareness and Chicana consciousness, as well as encouraging civic involvement and political awareness, following the basic principles of the Plan de Santa Barbara, a Chicano plan for higher education.
AChA held its first annual high school conference in 1993. The conferences have helped to form solidarity among Chicanas and provided support in their college entrance experience. They have also provided networking and leadership skills for attendees. AChA continues to be active by supporting Chicanas in becoming advocates for the empowerment of the people.
