Abstract:
Fidelino de Sousa Figueiredo (1988-1967) was a visiting professor at UC Berkeley before returning to Brazil where he taught Portuguese literature at the University of São Paulo (1938-51). He applied a critical spirit to the study of literaure, focusing on the psychological personality of authors. The collection consists of photocopies of 962 letters from various persons to de Figueiredo.

Biographical / historical:

Fidelino de Sousa Figueiredo was born in 1888 in Lisbon, Portugal; studied law and literature at Coimbra University; served in the cabinet of the dictator general Sidónio Pais, going into exile after his assassination; in 1920 taught in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spent three years in Madrid (1927-30), in 1931 became a visiting professor at UC Berkeley; returned to Brazil, where he taught Portuguese literature at the University of São Paulo (1938-51); applied a critical spirit to the study of literature, focusing on the psychological personality of authors; publications include Revista de história (1912-28), A história literária como ciência (1912), História da literature portuguesa (1913-24), and Notas para um idearum português (1929); returned to Portugal; he died in 1967.
