The John Leonard Yingst papers are comprised of pilot's flying logbooks, service records, identification documents and photographs gathered during Yingst's time as a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary(ATA). The material relates to airplane ferrying operations of the ATA in Great Britain during World War II, and is arranged in chronological order.
The pilot's flying logbooks relate to John Yingst's first flight in March of 1941 through his final flight in April of 1945. His service records consist of all contracts entered into with the ATA, accident reports, flight documents, forms related to rationing, and correspondence related to his contract termination with the ATA. The identification documents consist of passport, embarkation orders, various alien registration documents, license to possess maps, and an insurance certificate for a private automobile. The photographs consist of 12 images taken between 1943 and 1945 depicting various ATA ferry groups in which John Yingst was a member, John Yingst with aircraft, the airport at Ringway, Manchester, and John Yingst with various companions.

John Leonard Yingst was born May 21, 1915, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He joined the Air Transport Auxiliary on January 16, 1941, and served as a flying officer until April 15, 1945. During this time he was responsible for ferrying military aircraft in Great Britain. After terminating his contract with the Air Transport Auxiliary, he returned home to Pennsylvania.
