Background

Scope and content:

Since the 1970s, the Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) has hosted numerous guest speakers in conjunction with its film and video exhibition program. The speakers include filmmakers from around the world, as well as others involved in filmmaking, film study and criticism, and film preservation. The audiovisual collection documents these speakers' appearances and consists of question and answer sessions, lectures, symposia, and other interactions between PFA guests and audiences. The collection includes over 6,000 recordings of varying length. Earlier recordings are on audiocassette; those made since 2006 are recorded digitally. Since 2016, speakers have been regularly recorded with video in addition to audio.

In 2018, BAMPFA received a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources that allowed for digitization of over 800 of our earliest analog guest recordings. Copyright allowing, these digitized recordings are made available on archive.org.
