Chapbooks in the collection document elements of popular culture in Mexico around the turn of the century, and consist of booklets on a variety of subjects, including literature, poems, folk songs, plays, religious tracts, and healthcare advice.

Scope and content:

The collection is composed of chapbooks printed by the famous Mexican publisher and printer Antonio Vanegas Arroyo from 1880-1925. Chapbooks in the collection consist of small, printed paper booklets, usually illustrated with a woodcut drawing on the cover, and occassionally containing illustrations throughout the book as well.

Chapbooks produced by Arroyo document a variety of subjects related to popular Mexican culture, including literature, poems, folk songs, plays, religious tracts, and healthcare advice.

Biographical / historical:

Antonio Vanegas Arroyo was a famous printer and publisher around the turn of the century in Mexico, whose press was active from 1880 until the 1940s. Arroyo's press was known for producing a number of popular publications created by various artists and edited by Arroyo, including chapbooks, broadsides, street gazettes, comics, and corridos.
