-
The collection comprises administrative records, publications, ephemera, and realia, documenting the origins, development, and activities of the San Francisco Schuetzen Verein between the years 1860 and 1946. The collection also includes materials related to the San Francisco International Shooting Festival Association, which hosted the Grand Prize Shooting Tournament at Emeryville's Shellmound Park to complement the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition held in San Francisco in 1915.
Administrative records for the San Francisco Schuetzen Verein and the San Francisco International Shooting Festival include articles of incorporation, bylaws, reports, committee meeting minutes, membership applications and information, shooting logs, tournament records, and address files. Many of these records were written, printed, or pasted in bound volumes. The collection also contains publications and ephemera in English and German created by both organizations, including invitations, bulletins, programs, posters, and donation cards. The ornate regalia of the San Francisco Schuetzen Verein is reflected in a variety of realia worn or used by club members, including silk sashes, stamps, targets, a metal box, and a San Francisco International Shooting Festival embossed seal press.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The San Francisco Schuetzen Verein was founded by Jacob Knell, H. Millemann, and John Reinhart in August 1859 as a militia and shooting society for German Americans. In its early days, the organization held shooting tournaments, parades, and eagle-king shoots, as well as regular target practice in Hayes Park. After President Lincoln's assassination in 1865, the Schuetzen Verein patrolled the streets of San Francisco for two days and two nights until they were relieved by federal troops. The organization evolved into a social and athletic club, sponsoring shooting festivals and events around the Bay Area, with headquarters at the corner of Polk and Turk Streets in San Francisco.
The San Francisco International Shooting Festival Association was an aggregation of Bay Area shooting clubs that included the Schuetzen Verein. In August and September of 1915, the Association hosted the Grand Prize Shooting Tournament at Shellmound Park in Emeryville as part of the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition held in San Francisco that year.
