Biographical / historical:

Maude C. Pilkington was a journalist and travel writer who was born on January 22, 1888, and raised in the Seabright neighborhood of Santa Cruz, California. After school she became a writer for the San Jose Mercury Herald, and in 1919, after a 10 year courtship, she married Richard R. Lukens, captain of a ship in the service of the U.S. Geodetic Survey. She continued her journalistic endeavors well into the 1930's, publishing travel narratives. In 1936 the couple bought a home in Riverside, CA, where they resided after retirement. Captain Lukens died in 1964, followed by Maude on May 29, 1966.
