Biographical / historical:

Webb was born on October 4, 1909 in Denver, Colorado; graduated from Stanford University, 1930; from 1936 wrote fiction for such magazines as Saturday evening post, Collier's, and Cosmopolitan; became a Hollywood screenwriter in the late 1930s writing for Roy Rogers westerns; served as secretary of the Screen Writers' Guild in 1950; won 1963 Academy Award for the original screenplay of How the West was won (1962); other script credits include: South of Santa Fe (1942), Apache (1954), The big country (1958), Cape Fear (1963), Cheyenne autumn (1964), They call me Mr. Tibbs (1970), and The organization (1971); he died in 1974.
