Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection includes bound transcripts of oral history interviews, audiovisual recordings of interviews and digital media, and unpublished transcripts and supplemental material, including clippings and other printed material, photographs, research files, correspondence, and administrative records. Major topic areas within the collection include the HIV/AIDS epidemic in San Francisco, surgery at UCSF in the postwar years, nursing, biotechnology, diversity in U.S. medical schools, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cardiovascular and cancer research at UCSF.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The collection includes oral histories and related material created by the University of California, San Francisco Library and Department of the History of Health Sciences and the Regional Oral History Office (ROHO) of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. Many of the interviews were conducted by Nancy Rockafellar, PhD, and Sally Smith Hughes, PhD. The published transcripts were predominantly created after 1990, when UCSF inaugurated a campus oral history project designed to interview crucial eyewitnesses to UCSF's development in the postwar years. In 1994, the project became a full-fledged Oral History Program. Sally Smith Hughes, as an interviewer with ROHO and UCSF, conducted interviews with UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital faculty and staff for the San Francisco AIDS Oral History Series. ROHO staff have been conducting oral histories since the office's inception in 1954.
