- Willard Hougland was a writer, publisher, anthropologist, impresario, businessman and gourmet cook. He also ran a rare book store and art gallery in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. The collection contains correspondence, a short story, a poem, and signed typescript copies of materials presented for consideration to Willard Hougland while assistant to the director at the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and as editor of the New Mexico number of the Southwest review.

Collection contains signed typescript copies of materials presented for consideration to Willard Hougland, assistant to the director, Laboratory of Anthropology, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and editor of the New Mexico number of the Southwest review, 1946. Also contains related correspondence, including letters from Joseph O'Kane Foster, Haniel Long, Robert Nathan, Edward Teller, and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as a typescript short story from Foster and a poem from Long.

Hougland was originally from Kansas City; became writer, publisher, anthropologist, impresario, businessman and gourmet cook; served as assistant to the director, Laboratory of Anthropology, Santa Fe, New Mexico; edited the New Mexico number of the Southwest Review, 1946; moved to California, where he ran a rare book store and art gallery in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County; died in 1958 in Monterey, California.
