The Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) is an organized research unit of the University of California focused on interdisciplinary research on topics related to contemporary transportation. The headquarters and library of ITS are housed at the University of California, Berkeley; branches are located at the Davis, Irvine, and Los Angeles campuses. ITS was founded at UC Berkeley in 1948 by the California State Legislature in response to the deferred maintenance of transportation facilities during World War II. The first branch was established at Irvine in 1974, originally under the name the Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering.
ITS research at UCI involves faculty and students from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, and the Department of Information and Computer Science. ITS sponsors conferences and colloquia to disseminate research results. It is also part of the University of California Transportation Center, one of ten federally-designated centers for transportation research and education, and is a member of the Council of University Transportation Centers. ITS also houses at UCI the California Advanced Transportation Management System Testbed and the Center for Traffic Simulation Studies.
