- Biographical / historical:

Arthur L. Bolton was born in San Francisco circa 1877 and died in Berkeley in 1958 at the age of 81. In the 1890s he studied Ornithology at Stanford University under Leverett Mills Loomis, and spent field time in the Farallon Islands. In 1898 he journeyed to Alaska, where he searched for gold and wrote prose. He served as the Superintendent of Grounds at the University of California Berkeley from 1902-1905. Arthur L. Bolton at one time ran for mayor of Berkeley, was the Northern California Representative for the State Board of Architects, and was a member of the California Academy of Sciences. He was an Honorary member of the Poetry Society of England, and was a prolific writer of short stories and poetry. He married Mary Saylor Bolton (1879-1971) and had three children; Eleanor Saylor Bolton, Arthur Jr., and Beatrice Mary Bolton. The family lived on La Loma Avenue, in Berkeley California.
