USA for Africa, incorporated under the leadership of Ken Kragen on January 10, 1985, was part of a plan to distribute the proceeds of a musical recording to benefit famine victims in Africa. Forty-five musicians recorded the single titled, "We are the world," on January 28, 1985, which became the quickest selling record in music history. Over $53.1 million was distributed or allocated to projects in Africa and the U.S.
