Abstract:
Richard Gordon Lillard (1909-1990) was an English professor and author. He taught at Los Angeles City College (1933-34, 1935-42, and 1962-65), Indiana University (1943-47), UCLA (1947-65), and California State University, Los Angeles (1965-1974). In 1948, he won the Silver Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California for The Great Forest (1947). His other publications include Desert Challenge: an Interpretation of Nevada (1942) and Eden in Jeopardy (1966). The collection consists primarily of Richard Lillard's manuscripts and notes for articles and unpublished work but also contains personal items and materials related to his academic career.

Biographical / historical:

Lillard was born on June 3, 1909 in Los Angeles, California; attended Sacramento Junior College; BA, Stanford University, 1930; MA, University of Montana, 1931; graduate student, Harvard University, 1934-35; Ph.D, University of Iowa, 1943; high school teacher in Wyoming and California, 1931-33; instructor in English, Los Angeles City College, 1933-34 and 1935-42; instructor (1943-45) and assistant professor (1945-47), Indiana University; assistant professor of English, UCLA, 1947-49; faculty member (1949-65), associate professor of English (1962-65), Los Angeles City College; professor of English and American studies, California State University, Los Angeles, beginning in 1965; won Silver Medal of Commonwealth Club of California in 1948 for The great forest (1947); other publications include Desert challenge: an interpretation of Nevada (1942) and Eden in jeopardy (1966); he passed away on March 19, 1990.
