- J.J. Sakurai (1933-1982) was a physicist credited with independently discovering the V-A theory of the weak interactions. He was a professor in the UCLA Department of Physics (1970- ), a Sloan Fellow (1962-66), a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1964-82), a Guggenheim Fellow (1975-76), and a von Humboldt Fellow (1981-82). The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and publications related to Sakurai's career and life.

Sakurai was born in Tokyo in 1933; graduated from Harvard summa cum laude in 1955; Ph.D, Cornell, 1958; while still a student at Cornell, he independently discovered the V-A theory of the weak interactions; became an assistant professor at University of Chicago in 1959 and a full professor in 1964; joined UCLA Department of Physics in 1970; was a Sloan Fellow (1962-66), a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1964-82), a Guggenheim Fellow (1975-76), and a von Humboldt Fellow (1981-82); publications include Advanced quantum mechanics (1967) and Modern quantum mechanics (c. 1985); died in Geneva in 1982.
