Background

Scope and content:

Consists of records from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1240 (Chico, Calif.) and other predecessor locals, including Local 2043 and Local 156. Materials from locals 1254, 1495, 1599, 1970, and 1051 are also included. The bulk of the records consist of correspondence, minutes, membership records, financial records, administrative materials, and various publications, with a small amount of convention and training materials also included. Also included are materials from the Wood, Wire and Metal Lathers' International Union.

Many of the records document the day-to-day operations of the locals. Membership logbooks, authorization cards, and contact/transfer cards were created in order to keep track of members, record their monthly dues and receipts, and document their standing in the union. Individual dues books, dating from 1923 to 2009, list payments from hundreds of union members. For each local, minute books contain detailed reports of local meetings, including discussions of grievances, costs, disbursements, motions, and appointments. Account books and ledgers contain descriptions of the locals' assets, liabilities, income and expenses, as well as monies received from membership dues. Other records comprise forms and manuals used for administrative purposes, and descriptions of various agreements and acts that impact workers in the construction industry.

Biographical / historical:

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) was created in 1881 when representatives from 11 cities met with Peter J. McGuire, first General Secretary of UBC, in Chicago and mapped out a constitution, structure, and membership for a new union. The UBC played a major role in establishing an eight-hour workday and minimum hourly wages for workers in the building trades. Today, UBC is one of North America's largest trade unions and represents many workers in the construction industry, including general carpenters, scaffolders, drywallers, pile drivers, cabinetmakers, roofers, and lathers. There are 36 regional and district councils, with each council overseeing individual local unions. Carpenters Local 1240 is located in Chico, California, and includes predecessor Locals 2043 and 156.
