The Wilmington Mutual Savings and Loan Collection, 1924-1970 is a collection that provides a window into the business functionality of this important local bank to Wilmington. The collection contains the meeting minutes of the bank, cash receipt ledgers, photographs and they all provide great insight into the operation of the bank and how money was used by those in Wilmington. The collection tells the story of Wilmington by way of business.

Biographical / historical:

Wilmington Mutual Savings and Loan was originally chartered on September 11, 1920 as Wilmington Mutual Building and Loan, located at 316 Canal Street (now Avalon Bl.), Wilmington, California. The institution was founded by Erhard Opp, who was its first president. When Opp passed away in 1929, Louis Denni became president. Louis Denni was succeeded by his son, Joseph A. Denni. The corporate name was changed to Wilmington Mutual Savings and Loan in 1943, and in 1952 the bank moved to the corner of Opp St. and Avalon.
