Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of photographs, programs, clippings, administrative files and correspondence, research files, keepsakes, notes, and original song lyrics written by Santa Barbara Ring Shout group leader Frances L. Moore. Material dates from approximately 2000 to 2018, and includes DVD and CD-R recordings.

Ring shout was a dance-like form originally practiced by communities of enslaved people in the American South. It combines elements of Christianity with African songs and dance rituals. The Santa Barbara Ring Shout group holds regular practices at the Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden in Santa Barbara, California, and has performed at local events annually, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and various Juneteenth celebrations. Though small in size, the collection documents local efforts to preserve and share this rich cultural tradition.
