Series I.A comprises materials created or generated in preparation for, during, and following Luynes's 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea and includes both written and visual documentation of the expedition.
Written documentation includes the handwritten notes of naturalist Dr. Gustave Combe; two versions of Luynes's handwritten travel journal, one of which, Notes de voyage en Palestine et dans le désert is bound; Louis Vignes's bound travel notes, "Mer Morte-Arabah-Palmyre," and his manuscript for Extrait des notes d'un voyage d'exploration à la mer Morte, dans le Wady Arabah, sur la rive gauche du Jourdain et dans le désert de Palmyre which was published by Henri Plon in 1865 under the auspices of Luynes.
Also included is a large dossier of documents by and related to Vignes labeled "Mr. Vignes." Materials include items written by Vignes after the conclusion of the main expedition when he was in Beirut; during and after his trip to Palmyra; and on his return to Paris at the end of 1864. A separate group of materials included in the dossier labeled "Notes diverses récépissées du chemin de fer" comprises several groups of files. These include correspondence between Vignes and Luynes; Vignes and Charles Brun; Vignes and Charles Maunoir; and others, written both during and after the expedition. Also found here ae writings by Vignes; notes made or consulted by Vignes; and materials and correspondence regarding the publication of Vignes's "Note sur quelques déterminations de coordonnées géographiques," his Extrait des notes d'un voyage d'exploration à la mer Morte dans le Wady Arabah, sur la rive gauche de Jourdain et dans le désert de Palmyre; publié sous les auspices de M. le duc de Luynes, and its accompanying maps.
Visual documentation of the 1864 expedition includes Vignes's paper and glass negatives, glass positives, and albumen prints documenting the main expedition; glass negatives and albumen prints of Petra, Mount Hor, and 'Ain Jidy (Ein Gedi) by Peter Bergheim; and glass negatives and albumen prints of Sidon and Tyre by G. Jardin.
