Scope and content:

The series comprises materials created during the two expeditions sponsored by the Duc de Luynes to the Dead Sea and Transjordan in 1864 and 1866 respectively.

Series I.A comprises materials created or generated in preparation for, during, and following Luynes's 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea and includes both written and visual documentation of the expedition. Series I.B contains Henri Sauvaire's visual documentation made during the 1866 expedition to explore the Crusader castles and other sites of southern Jordan.

Arranged in two subseries: Series I.A. Duc de Luynes's 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea, 1864-1866; and Series I.B. Duc de Luyens's 1866 expedition to the Holy Land, 1866.
