Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of items related to Founder's Day celebrations, general convocations, and presidential inaugurations. Materials in the collection include programs, invitations, speech transcripts, general information, photographs, and audio and video recordings of particular events. Items in the collection range from 1958 to 2013.

Biographical / historical:

From its beginning, Pepperdine has included regular assemblies where students gather to worship, hear engaging speakers encourage and challenge them with God's word, and learn more about how they can make a difference in this world. Chapel and convocation programs are the contemporary connection to this integral aspect of Pepperdine's Christian mission. All Seaver undergraduate students are required to attend the equivalent of one convocation program each week.

Founder's Day is a specific type of convocation meant to serve as the opening celebration of the new academic year, and also allows students, faculty, staff and alumni an opportunity to look back on the humble beginnings of the university. The first Founder's Day convocation of George Pepperdine College took place on October 5, 1964, on the original Los Angeles campus, 27 years after the college opened and two years after Mr. Pepperdine's 1962 passing. The tradition continues each year on the Malibu campus of Pepperdine University, commemorated on the Wednesday closest to September 21 in honor of the college's historic 1937 day of dedication.
