Summary

Abstract:
The collection contains information about the two hunger strikes at UCSB that led, among other results, to the ethnic and gender studies undergraduate requirements and the eventual Ph.D program in Chicana/o Studies. The collection is made up of collected news clippings detailing issues and events leading to, during, and the aftermath of the hunger strikes of 1989 and 1994 as well as information concerning ethnic minorities and racial issues at UCSB. The collection is made up of articles, newspaper clippings, publications, digital photo prints, and flyers. Included is a notarized copy of the agreement signed May 6, 1994 by the university administration and the hunger strikers. It is noteworthy that a copy of UCSB Chancellor Barbara Uehling's statement of commitment to "El Centro Concept" dated April 25,1989 is included. The collection also illuminates the internal development of the Chicano Studies Department. In particular, the collection highlights the 1994 struggle by the student organization El Congreso to voice its support for the ethnic studies requirement and its opposition to the University of California's interference in the process.

Background

Scope and content:

This collection is in two document boxes, one half-size document box, one binder box, and one flat oversize box. The materials collected largely cover the period 1989 - 1995. It contains information about the two hunger strikes, one in 1989 and another in 1994 at UCSB that led, among other results, to the ethnic and gender studies undergraduate requirements and the eventual Ph.D. program in Chicana/o Studies.

The collection was created from disparate sources. It draws together a quantity of published articles, news clippings, and ephemera compiled over the years. It does not purport to be a representative collection and presently spans five boxes. It is expected to grow over time with the addition of donated materials.

It is organized into three series. The first series, El Congreso Hunger Strike 1989, details through correspondence, newsclippings and handouts the issues leading to the hunger strike, advocacy during the strike, and responses to the strike including actions by administration and the Academic Senate. Files are arranged alphabetically by topic.

The second series, Hunger Strike 1994, includes information related to strike issues including the strikers' 6-point demands, background on the ethnic and gender studies requirement, memoranda and statements concerning the aftermath to the strike. Files are arranged alphabetically by topic.

The third series, UCSB Ethnic Minorities and Racial Issues, is largely made up of newsclippings from the UCSB Daily Nexus newspaper on topics such as campus academic, social and cultural life involving ethnic monorities as well as issues related to race and identity. Included in this series is a group of late 1970s photographs of the UCSB Black EOP Component, information on the student walkout of 1998. Files are arranged alphabetically by topic.
