Background

Scope and content:

A collection of 13 color photographs showing people gathered in front of an unknown storefront where photographs of the May 1974 shootout between the Los Angeles Police Department and the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) are offered for sale. The people gathered in front of the store, which is almost certainly in Los Angeles, includes law enforcement officers in uniform and civilians looking at the photographs for sale. Signs on the storefront's window read "SLAΒ-LAPD photo story as it happened" and "Authentic photo souvenir key chain." The photographs were offered at 50 cents each. The 1974 shootout on East 54th Street in Los Angeles is one of the most notorious in Los Angeles history. After the shooting stopped and a fire caused by police tear gas was extinguished, police recovered 19 firearms from the SLA members involved. The 13 snapshots in the collection are color prints on Kodak branded paper with printed margins and a "Jun 74" date. The United Federated Forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army was a far-left militant organization active between 1973 and 1975. The SLA was best known for the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst.
