Elizabeth Graham Atwater (1869-1900) was born in Newry, Northern Ireland. Atwater taught briefly in London and Weston-super-Mare before traveling to China as governess with a family of missionary educators. She was subsequently appointed by The American Board of Missions as a missionary after passing the examination in Chinese. She was married to Reverend Ernest Richmond Atwater (approximately 1860-1900), a Congregational minister and missionary to China.
