This collection contains articles, slides, newsletters, correspondence, and other material on Dr. Martin M. Barnes, past University of California, Riverside, professor of entomology and plant pathology. Barnes' research was focused on the practical needs of agriculture. The bulk of the collection contains information on pests in California agriculture and information of his professional life at Cornell University and at the University of California, Riverside, Citrus Experiment Station.

Barnes, past University of California, Riverside, professor of entomology and plant pathology. Barnes' research was focused on the practical needs of agriculture. The bulk of the collection contains information on pests in California agriculture and information of his professional life at Cornell University and at the University of California, Riverside, Citrus Experiment Station.

Biographical / historical:

Martin M. Barnes was a professor of entomology and plant pathology at the University of California, Riverside.

He was born on August 3, 1920 in Calgary, Canada and spent his childhood in the Louisiana, Arkansas and California. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1941 and went on to earn his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1946.

He was noted for his research on control of arthropod pests of almonds, apples, dates, grapes, and walnuts. During his tenure at UCR he was widely published, having wrote 70 research papers, many book chapters and over 100 technical and popular publications.

He retired from UCR in 1991 after a 45 year career. He died on April 22, 2007 in Riverside, CA.
