Scope and content:

A collection of manuscripts, correspondence and ephemera relating to Dwight Cchichester Smith's work on Robert Browne (1550?-1633), English churchman and theologian. The manuscripts include Smith's Ph.D. thesis and a biography of Browne; the correspondence relates to Smith's efforts to publish the biography, and the ephemera includes a photograph of Smith, reading room tickets, and printed commencement material from Smith's graduation from the University of Edinburgh in 1936.

Biographical / historical:

Dwight Chichester Smith (1900-1985) was born in Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, his father was Dr. Clarence Austin Smith and his mother was Susan Selden Chichester. After his graduation from Yale University in 1922, he taught English at Yale in China for two years, followed by graduate study at Yale Divinity School where he received his Divinity Degree in 1927. During this period he carried on part-time work, teaching at Yale and Wesleyan Universities and giving pastoral service at the Dwight Place Church in New Haven and in the church at Redding, Connecticut. Following his ordination, Smith served as minister of the First Congregational Church of Bellingham, Washington, from 1927 to 1939. During the years 1934 to 1936 he was on a leave of absence to Scotland, where he studied at Edinburgh University and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. He was minister of the United Churches of Olympia, Washington, from 1939 until he moved to Mount Vernon Church in 1948. In 1953, Smith left the ministry and moved to New York City to be Executive Secretary of the John Milton Society. He married Josephine Mersereau Wood and together they had two sons and two daughters. Smith died on 14 July 1985, in Los Angeles, California.
