Norman David Hanwell was a China scholar whose research interests included Chinese Communism, guerilla warfare, Chinese villages, Sino-Japanese relations, and Japanese aggressions in China in the 1930s. His articles appeared in publications such as the Christian Science Monitor, Herald Tribune, Asia Magazine, and The Nation.
Hanwell was born on February 20, 1909 in San Francisco, California. He married Dorothea Smith in 1937, and the couple moved to China in 1939. Hanwell died of a heart infection on October 5, 1941 in Peking, China
