Thomas B. Simpson and John E. Millar were two clerks originally employed by Charles Van Megen Gillespie, who arrived in San Francisco in 1848 and was a pioneering searcher of records. Simpson and Millar formed their own firm about 1883. Robert G. Perkins was a pioneer of 1849, at one time a large property owner in the Mission district in San Francisco. Perkins and his wife Elizabeth divorced late in 1860, and a court case relates to their property, Perkins v. Center 12 Pacific States Reports 713 (1868). Edmund Green was born in Pennsylvania, came to California in 1849, managed mining companies in this state, and settled in Oakland.
