Elizabeth "Betita" Martínez (1925-2021) was a Chicana feminist, community organizer, activist, author, and educator. She wrote numerous books and articles on different topics relating to social movements in the Americas, notably 500 Years of Chicano History in Pictures and the companion 500 Years of Chicana Women's History.
She was the only child of Manuel Guillermo and Ruth Philips Martinez, was raised in Washington, D.C., and became the first Latina to graduate from Swarthmore College in 1946. She was deeply involved with SNCC in the 1960s, and later started the Spanish-English bilingual newspaper El Grito del Norte with lawyer Beverly Axelrod. She went on to co-found the Chicano Communications Center and the Institute for Multiracial Justice, and served on a number of advisory boards for civil rights and anti-racist education organizations.
