The Richard H. Hendrickson Photographs and Slides contain thousands of images pertaining to railroad freight cars and locomotives throughout North America.
Of particular interest are his photographs, which contain a wide range of rolling stock subjects, including automobile box cars, box cars, flat cars, freight cars, gondola cars, hopper cars, locomotives, meat cars, refrigerator cars, stock cars, tank cars, and miscellany.

Richard H. Hendrickson (1931-2014) was an academic linguist, railroad modeler, historian, and author. Born and raised in Southern California, Hendrickson developed an interest in railway history and technology from his years spent around the Santa Fe Railway. Following high school Hendricks spent a number of years as a sports car racer and mechanic before enlisting in the Navy as an electronics technician during the Korean War.
After the conflict, he earned a B.A in liberal arts from UC Santa Barbara in 1959, an M.S in linguistic science from the University of Wisconsin in 1960, and a Ph.D. in English linguistics from the University of Connecticut in 1968. He taught at San Diego State University beginning in 1963, before transferring to Sonoma State University in 1970, where he would stay until his retirement in 1995. In 1999 Hendrickson and his wife, Sandra, moved from Cotati, California to Ashland, Oregon, where they resided the rest of his life.
Over the course of his life, he contributed articles to over 400 publications pertaining to model prototype railroads, and co-authored at least five volumes of reference books on Santa Fe rolling stock box cars with Edward S. Kaminski. Additionally, Hendrickson authored a Santa Fe Railway Painting and Lettering Guide for Model Railroaders.
He was physically active in skiing, hiking, bicycling, and sailing for a majority of his life. He was also an active member of various organizations and societies, the SMTFC modeling group, the Ashland Hillclimbers, Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, and the Ashland Airport Commission.
