Alan J. Pakula papers span the years 1950-1998 and encompass approximately 90 linear feet. The collection consists largely of scripts and production material for films produced and directed by Pakula, as well as photographs. The photograph series consists of prints, contact sheets, and albums of motion picture production photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Alan J. Pakula was an American director, producer, and screenwriter active in film from 1949 to 1997. He worked as a production assistant before producing his first film, FEAR STRIKES OUT, in 1957. He collaborated with director Robert Mulligan on half a dozen films. Pakula directed his first film, THE STERILE CUCKOO, in 1969. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the best picture category for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962), in the directing category for ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976), and in the writing category for SOPHIE'S CHOICE (1982).
