Background

Scope and content:

The Latino Comic and Publication Collection (1952-2016) consists of 3.38 linear feet of comic books, oversized posters, zines, and books related to Latino/Latina writers and artists as well as Latino/Latina history and culture. It includes comic books from recognized artists and writers including Javier Hernandez, Rafael Navarro, Liz Mayorga, Carlos Saldana and others. The collection also includes other artists and subject matters.

Biographical / historical:

Many comic books published before the 1980's did not contain Latino/Latina themes or characters. One of the first comic books to include such material was Love and Rockets, a self-published comic book by the three Hernandez brothers- Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario. The comic book was first published in 1982 and later published by the comic book publisher, Fantagraphics. Today, there is an annual comic book expo, the Latino Comic Expo, to showcase the works of Latino/Latina artists as well as other comic book artists.

This collection features comic book artists such as Javier Hernandez, Rafael Navarro, Liz Mayorga, Dave Ortega, and others.

Javier Hernandez is best known for his comic El Muerto: The Aztec Zombie, and Maniac Priest. Hernandez is one of the co-creators of the Latino Comic Expo.

Rafael Navarro is an artist who works with many different forms of media, including comic books. His work has included comics for Marvel and DC as well as creating his comic, Sonambulo.

Liz Mayorga is an artist from Southeast Los Angeles who creates comics and zines. She was also the Director of the San Francisco Zine Fest from 2012-2015.

Dave Ortega is a cartoonist from Massachusetts. His work includes Hacienda, Insurrectos, and De Las Casas He has also served as a Latino Comics Expo Panelist in 2016.
