Scope and content:

This collection is comprised of documents, newsletters, flyers, correspondence, and publications related to Dr. Singleton's involvement with CORE/NAACP, UCLA's Institute of Industrial Relations, the Western Student Movement, the Office of Assembly Research, UCLA's Bunche Center, the Angela Davis controversy, and the Education Finance Reform Project.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Robert Singleton studied at the University of California, Los Angeles in the 1960s, earning a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, a Master’s degree in International Economics, and a Ph.D. in Urban and Labor Economics. During his time as a student, Singleton served as president of the school’s chapter of NAACP where he organized sit-ins at stores with discriminatory practices as well as investigating other forms of discrimination on or around campus. Singleton continued his activist work by joining the Congress of Racial Equality, or CORE, that initiated the Freedom Rides of 1961. As a result of his participation in the Freedom Rides, Singleton was arrested and sent to Parchman Penitentiary along with his wife Helen Singleton, a fellow Freedom Rider.

Dr. Singleton joined the staff of UCLA, working as faculty in the Graduate School of Management as well as Chief Researcher for the Institute of Industrial Relations. He also went on to serve as Founding Director of the Center for African-American Studies, now the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies. During this time, Singleton also became involved in the Angela Davis Defense Committee, supporting fellow faculty member Angela Davis after her firing due to her membership in the Communist Party. Singleton also worked for the U.S. Department of Labor as well as the California Assembly Office of Research and was Founding Director of the Education Finance Reform Project. His latest position is that of faculty in the Economics department of Loyola Marymount University where he has been since 1982.

This collection has been divided into eight series based on different aspects of Dr. Singleton's life and career. They include: CORE/ NAACP activities (which include the Freedom Rides), UCLA's Institute of Industrial Relations, the Western Student Movement, the Office of Assembly Research, UCLA's Bunche Center, the Angela Davis controversy, the Education Finance Reform Project, and miscellaneous material.
