Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains photographs of Earline Tate and her family, a 1937 Santa Barbara Year book with signatures, newspaper articles, and materials related to Tate's Board of Trustee campaign for the Pasadena Board of Education.

The newspaper clippings cover racial hatred in the Santa Barbara area, a NAACP-sponsored talk at UCSB, and Tate's Pasadena Board of Education bid.

Biographical / historical:

Artie Earline Frederick Douglas Hopkins Tate (Feburary 1, 1921-September 22, 2008) was born in San Antonio, Texas to Otto and Emma Hopkins. The family moved to California in the early 1920s, spending several years in Los Angeles before settling in Santa Barbara, CA. The Tate family owned and operated several businesses in Santa Barbara, including The Cotton Club, The Brown Derby supper club, Clean Way Garbage, and the Casitas family ranch.

After graduating high school early, Earline studied Sociology at the Santa Barbara State College, now known as the University of California, Santa Barbara, before she transferred to the University of Southern California, where she earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Biological Sciences and a Master's degree in Medical Social Work. While at USC, Tate joined the Alpha Kappa Apha sorority and was elected as the first African-American Vice President of the Graduate Students Association at the School of Social Work.

Tate worked for 31 years as a social worker with the California Department of Mental Health, and in 1967, she ran to become a member of the Board of Trustee for the Pasadena Board of Education. Although she was not elected, she was the first African-American to run for the position.
