Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains correspondence from numerous British artists during the 19th and early 20th century received and collected by British painter Edith Hipkins. The majority of the correspondence consists of personal letters sent to Hipkins and her father, musician Alfred J. Hipkins. Some letters in the collection also include sketches, portraits, prints of wood engravings by Edith's brother John Hipkins, and notes handwritten by Edith on the correspondent.

Biographical / historical:

Edith Hipkins (1854-1945) was a British portrait painter, who exhibited her work regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1883 and 1911. A portrait she painted of her father, Alfred James Hipkins, is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903) was a British musicologist, musician, and musical antiquary. He was well known for his performances of the works of Chopin and wrote reviews on musical ethnology or musical antiquity for The Musical Times and The Athenaeum.
